About

I am Shirley Zhao Xiaoying (趙曉瑩), a journalist based in Hong Kong. A master’s degree holder in international journalism from Hong Kong Baptist University, I am currently writing for Time Out Hong Kong magazine, the Mantle and other publications.

My journalism interest is in current affairs and social issues, because by covering these, I can get to know people from all walks of life and present the society as it is. I also write about other things–almost everything in life. For me, living is a pleasure. That’s also one of the reasons why I want to start this blog to ode to the joy of life.

Born in Guizhou, a beautiful but poor province with motley cultures and large scales of virgin forests in southwest China, I was brought up in Guangdong, one of the most developed provinces in south China sharing the same culture as Hong Kong. I went to Shandong, a province in north China far away from home for college; my goal of becoming an outstanding journalist blossomed there.

I had an internship in Foshan Bureau, Nanfang Daily for more than four months (to see my archive in Nanfang Daily from here: http://www.nfdaily.cn/), and I deeply felt the government power over the media industry in the mainland. That is why I came to work in Hong Kong as a journalist–it is connected to the mainland, yet gives more freedom to journalists.

Next to my passion for truth and justice, traveling around hunting for various kinds of food is my greatest hobby. Extremely optimistic about life, I take it as a big wardrobe–everyday I try on something new, smile, and say to myself, “You are beautiful!”
